Food contact materials (FCM) are the substances that come in contact with food during manufacturing, packaging, storage, and handling. Sometimes these substances migrate from packaging containers into the food and change its composition.
Globally, FCM are a food safety concern because they can potentially contaminate food and cause health repercussions. Examples of food contact substances that can cause harm are bisphenol A [BPA], phthalates, benzophenone, benzophenone, polymers, colorants, inks, and other materials. The European legislation for FCM includes packaging materials that contact water intended for human consumption, such as bottles. For the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) governs food contact materials on a national level, while states like California have additional stringent laws (California Proposition 65 impacts ceramic and glass materials, for example). In China, the Food Safety Law of the People’s Republic of China consists of 130 National Standards and 125 Industry Standards for food package materials and containers, which specify safety requirements for things such as evaporation residue and migration of hazardous materials.
Chemical Migration Testing Solutions for Food and Beverages
LC-MS/MS food packaging testing solutions can equip your lab with the tools to evaluate food contact materials, so consumers don’t have to be concerned each time they unwrap their food or even open a bottle. With SCIEX LC-MS/MS solutions, routine food testing labs can confidently detect and quantify low levels of contaminants in food samples to comply with local and international regulations. More importantly, they can help make sure that the population isn’t at risk for consuming potentially hazardous packaging and food contact substances.
