Lipids are the unsung heroes of metabolism. They participate in a number of diverse processes, such as cell membrane integrity, energy transportation, cell signaling and mediation of host immune response to viral infections. A prerequisite to this functional diversity and specificity is substantial structural diversity, which makes conventional metabolomics workflows unfit for studying lipids.
