Answer

Removing the trailing index means that suffixes in the sample name are removed. The software identifies everything that follows a dash as a suffix. If you have more than one dash in your samples names it will take the one most right:

'STD 1-A' and 'STD 1-B' will be grouped as 'STD 1'

'STD 1-A bcd-30' and 'STD 1-A bcd-50' will be grouped as 'STD 1-A bcd'
