Under changes to the Portuguese packaging regulations in early 2017, where packaging waste is held by commercial and industrial final holders, it is these final holders who must ensure that it is recovered. The packaging producer is not required to finance the collection and recycling of this waste packaging, for example by joining a local packaging compliance scheme.
SCIEX places packaging into circulation in Portugal that becomes waste on commercial and industrial premises. SCIEX is therefore not currently legally required to finance the collection and recycling of this packaging when it becomes waste. Instead, this is the responsibility of SCIEX customers. SCIEX was previously a member of the SPV packaging compliance scheme, but this membership was terminated, as under changes to the Portuguese packaging regulations, packaging compliance schemes in Portugal are now only licensed to handle household packaging.
SCIEX customers in Portugal can ensure the recovery of the packaging waste by working with a local packaging waste contractor. You may already have arrangements established with a local waste contractor to handle other types of waste. Please contact your existing contractor through whom you may be able to arrange disposal of your packaging waste, or contact your local authority for details of other commercial and industrial waste packaging collection and recycling provisions close to you.
SCIEX is monitoring its obligations to finance the collection and recycling of waste packaging arising on commercial and industrial premises, as advised by the Portuguese authorities, and will implement financing arrangmenets (for example by joining a local packaging compliance scheme) when required.
