Putting pieces together in a different way and inventing something that nobody had considered is what drove SCIEX to launch the first commercial gas-phase triple quadrupole instrument. Its true value emerged ten years later. The realization that it could be a very powerful tool for liquid analysis instead of gas analysis meant that a new generation of quantification had begun.
Cracking the liquid-phase/gas-phase dilemma sparked the breakthrough launch of the API III system. Problems that had existed for decades could now be solved by measuring analytes in an LC flow – with reproducibility, high sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratios that were not possible before. The later discovery of the entirely new physical principle of collisional focusing has greatly impacted the field of atmospheric mass spectrometers in use today.
With sensitivity as the driving force, SCIEX had the extra edge. Exponential increases in sensitivity over the next decade earned SCIEX a reputation as the gold standard in quantitative mass spectrometry.
