A direct injection method for the analysis of artificial sweeteners in beverage samples is presented in this technical note. Artificial sweeteners analyzed include advantame, saccharin, sucralose, aspartame, acesulfame K, stevioside, rebaudioside, neotame, and sorbitol. The sample preparation method consisted of a simple 500x dilution, and the Phenomenex Synergi Polar RP column provided good retention and separation from the matrix. The SCIEX 4500 system showed in-sample LOQs ranging from 0.125 µg/mL for acesulfame K to 10 µg/mL for sucralose. Matrix spikes showed mean accuracies between 72% and 107% for the 1x LOQ spike, and between 91% and 114% for the 5x LOQ spike. Further, the method was applied to the analysis of seven artificial sweetener-containing soft drinks.
